1999

1999
A group of parents founded Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society
With encouragement from the Head of the Paediatric Oncology Ward at Sarawak General Hospital, a group of parents of children with childhood cancer formed a parent group to provide support and share experiences about childhood cancer.
2000

2000
Registration of SCCS
The Society is formally registered with the Malaysian Registrar of Societies, to enable more organised and sustained support and services to patients and their families.
2003

2003
Patient transport subsidy
A transport subsidy for families coming from afar, was started to ensure patients returned on time for follow up treatment. On average, the Society spends RM40,000 per year on this project.
2003

2003
Medical consumable sponsorship
SCCS began assisting with purchase of medical consumables used in the ward to ease the pains of cancer treatment, such as Central Venous Lines (CVL) to avoid trauma of multiple usage of needles.
2003

2003
Counselling Sessions started
Parent to parent counselling was started in 2002. Seeing a need for more structured counselling sessions besides the existing parent sharing sessions, the Society enlisted a social worker to begin scheduled one-on-one counselling sessions with the parents.
2004

2004
22 June - Launching of halfway home at Maxwell Road
The Society made its halfway home available in June 2001 to reduce the financial burden for outstation patients, and it was officially launched by the then-Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng in 2004. The 3 room house was able to accommodate up to 5 families at a time.
2005

2005
Bereavement donation provision
Bereavement donation was started to help lighten the load for families already going through the pain of losing a child to cancer. The donation is RM3,000 per bereavement.
2008

2008
First medical procedure subsidy
Through tireless fundraising efforts by parents and volunteers, the Society was finally able to begin providing subsidies for medical procedures not available at government hospitals, the first of which was a bone marrow transplant for a 4 year old boy that amounted to more than RM150,000.
2013

2013
Opening of SCCS Halfway Home, Kuching (Desa Wira)
A 13-room halfway home costing RM2.6million was completed and opened to accommodate the increasing number of patients from outstation. It has housed more than 350 families since opening. Another halfway home in Miri would open in 2016.
2014

2014
End of Life and Bereavement Care
SCCS started two projects to support end of life and bereavement care. Memorial Day was created to remember the children who passed away from childhood cancer, while also ensuring that families continue to feel included in SCCS after their child has passed. The Wishing Star project aims to create memorable moments for the child and their loved ones through visits to Legoland or other special interest places, themed parties, gifts, and many others.
2019

2019
Upgrading ward facilities
The upgrading of ward facilities at both the Paediatric Ward 2A of Sarawak General Hospital and Paediatric Ward at Sibu General Hospital were fully sponsored by the Society for added ease and comfort of patients and their families.
As has been our practice from the start, we are constantly finding ways to improve and expand upon the support services provided to families of children affected by childhood cancer. All this would not have been possible without the support of volunteers and donors over the years.
Thank you for Helping Kids Fight Cancer!

As a parent/caregiver, we learned about inner strengths and abilities that we didn’t even know we had. We dealt with emotions, tiredness, feeling unprepared and at the same time coping up with so many new things in life. With SCCS, it was like walking with soulmates, or best friends. SCCS brought us a little hope, they are like a rainbow after the rain!

Thank you for everything and Happy anniversary!

Life felt so uncertain when our child was confirmed to have a potentially fatal illness. We were so grateful to have SCCS’s help with basic needs, and financial assistance for us to adjust to our daughter's new life as a cancer patient. SCCS has brought joy to her throughout the difficult treatment period, and even after.
Thank you very much SCCS, with your help, my child is alive and healthy to this day.

Terima Kasih SCCS. ❤️

Help us continue to support children with cancer and their families. Regular donations enable us to continue to provide support to devastated families, provide lodging, transportation services and food, monthly financial subsidies, donate medical consumables and lab tests, subsidise or pay for expensive medical procedures that families otherwise cannot afford, bring joy, and create lasting family memories.
